Relic Blade is an incredible entry point to wargaming!
Relic Blade was created by Sean Sutter, and released by his studio, Metal King Studios, in 2015. The game does a fantastic job blending core wargaming mechanics with a fresh take on actions. The game also has built a great community and has been supported over the years with new miniatures and expansions.
Here’s a list of why Relic Blade is an incredible entry point to wargaming!
Mechanics
The mechanics of Relic Blade are just fun. Each character is guided by an action dice pool. The more nimble a character the more actions they can take for example. The actions can be to move, focus, dodge, shoot, fight, retreat, pick something up, and more. It’s all very easy to pick up and just about everything you do will cost an action.
When it comes to actions like shooting and fighting, however, a successful hit results in a challenge roll between players to determine damage. This keeps engagement throughout player turns and you’re constantly watching what your opponent is doing. If you’re looking for a game that is easy to learn, Relic Blade is perfect for that.
Miniatures
The miniatures are full of character. Designed by Sean, the miniatures are easy to paint and bursting at the seams with personality. While I’m not a big fan of metal miniatures due to them being easily chipped, plastic miniatures are on the way in 2026. The miniatures remain some of my favorite on the shelf, however, with each miniature feeling like a piece of art.
Scale
Relic Blade is played on a 2x2 which makes the games quick and fun. Getting into the action can happen on turn 1 but will definitely start in turn 2 after a round of positioning. With about a 45 minute to an hour game pace you can play multiple games. This allows you to learn what worked and what didn’t and apply it to another game. The game also features a low model count of 4-5 miniatures which allows you to grasp characters easily.
Campaign
The game can be played one on one but also features an amazing campaign system. This is where the game really shines as your warbands will be digging for relics and leveling up their camps to make potions and gear. Warbands will also try to avoid injury and even death as they progress through the scenarios.
Great For All Ages and Skill Levels
This game is perfect for people looking to start in the miniature game hobby. It actually helped my kids with their math skills! As an older adult, I absolutely love the game but my son, who is now 11, loves it as well. It’s often difficult to find things that connect us the way games like this do.
In conclusion, Relic Blade continues to stand firm against the test of time. As a game over ten years old it continues to grow and bring wargamers together. It’s perfect for beginners and advanced players alike and if you give it a chance, the charm and character of what it offers will keep bringing you back!
