Chasing perfection
I’ve mentioned it before, but the battle report game isn’t easy. Yes, it is absolutely rewarding, but watching the footage of a game, whether against my son or someone else, it’s hard to be perfect.
Should I have made that move? Did I miss that ability? Did I totally forget that special rule? Have you ever left a game thinking about these things? For me, it happens every time only I have the video to back it up.
It’s hard to play a perfect game and from a spectator’s perspective watching a battle report, it’s easy to look at it and say, “well, why didn’t you do that?” In the heat of the moment, however, it is much different. I’m sure we’ve all been so excited to charge that we forget about moving other units and go straight to rolling dice in combat. It just happens.
For our battle reports, I would say we chase perfection but it just isn’t obtainable. That’s why the emphasis is more on having fun and telling a story. I think once I get wrapped up in perfection the game changes. To me, it’s similar to golf which is another hobby of mine. I play for continuous improvement, each round striving to just do the best I can.
I’ll never make a perfect battle report, but I will improve each time and look to help others improve as well. That’s chasing perfection.
