Youtube hates variety channels

I’ve seen recently where Guerilla Miniature Games (GMG) is creating 4 additional YouTube channels to host his content. Also, Miniwargaming creators Matthew and Dave have created separate channels as has Ravaged Star. While these may be unrelated one thing has become clear. YouTube hates variety channels.

What’s the cause of creating specialty channels? Well, the algorithm as we know it, initially shows your video to your subscribers which makes total sense. Depending on the views it gets, clicks and interactions, we think the algorithm will continue to push it to people’s home pages. This allows for new people to watch and subscribe.

While nobody is certain to exactly what the algorithm does, this is what we think. So as a creator, if you’ve created a strong following in a certain game and then venture off to do something else, your videos will probably end up at the bottom of a search list. I think that is why specialization is so important, but can you imagine if every content creator had 5 channels to make this all work?

Something needs to change and if things begin to feel bloated people may turn away. I saw an example recently where another channel I subscribe to for horror movie reviews, “The Kill Count,” recently started a separate channel for their behind the scenes VLOGs. They tried it for a few months and I believe everything has now been moved back to the main channel.

I’m not sure what the future holds for variety channels such as mine. I have no desire to manage multiple channels and upload content to each. My channel is my own personal journey into the hobby which is broad and includes a lot of different content. I’m not so worried about my content getting pushed to new folks. I figure if the product is good you’ll find me, eventually.
